Violence in East Rock

East Rock and New Haven are mourning the tragic loss of Kevin Jiang, a 26 year old Yale graduate student, who on Saturday, February 6, 2021, was shot multiple times and killed around 8:30 p.m. on Lawrence Street between Nash and Nicoll in the Goatville section of East Rock.

Kevin's death is already the sixth homicide in New Haven in 2021, after nearly a year-long spike in crime in the city since the start of the pandemic. In 2020, violence in New Haven was the worst it had been since 2012.

We have lost a member of the community that truly exemplified the spirit of the East Rock neighborhood. Not only was Kevin a Yale School of the Environment student, but he also served in the U.S. Army National Guard, actively volunteered at Trinity Baptist Church on State Street, and volunteered for a homeless shelter. He loved fishing, hiking, and gardening, and played the piano and flute. He spent his last day with his fiancé, Zion Perry, ice fishing and cooking dinner at home.

New Haven Police do not believe the killing was a random act and are exploring leads as the killer remains at large.
